We took it out the back and shot it

After years of faithful service, the old Garmin eTrex Vista GPS has finally died. Bits of rubber have torn off, plastic bits have fallen off, the rubber around the edge doesn’t really stay on any longer (with an attempt at a repair similar to Vik’s) but most importantly, several buttons don’t really work too well any more. And so now we have a new, fancy and shiny replacement.

It’s the Vista HCx model, which is actually fairly similar to the old Vista C, but has a few improvements – it goes a lot quicker for one (perhaps the old one was getting senile), and is a bit sturdier in construction.

Hopefully this one manages even more years of faithful service.

Redearth Creek

On Tuesday we went for a ski up the Redearth Creek trail – you can keep following it all the way to Egypt Lake, and then around to Sunshine Village if you really want, or to Shadow Lake Lodge, but we just skied along for 5km before turning around. It’s a nice enough little trail, and there was still plenty of coverage – but the last downhill back to the car could be treacherous when icy!

Ribbon Creek Trails

There’s a small network of ski trails about Ribbon Creek, near Kananaskis Village and Nakiska Ski Resort.

They’re track set for classical skiing, and there isn’t really enough room between tracks for skate-skiing.

A nice little set of trails to spend a day exploring, there is quite a lot of up and down – and so some nice views as well. It’s nice to ski somewhere different for a change.

Out for a walk around town

The return of the warm weather (for good? Could this be Spring?) and the departure of the lurgy prompted a long walk about town.

Bike dreaming

I’m still dreaming of a new mountain-bike, and have been dragging the Moosling through all the local bike stores to look at the 2011 bikes that are arriving. The Giant Anthem W? The Giant Anthem 29er? A Santa Cruz Juliana?

With all the snow and cold weather recently, the trails are still thoroughly covered though, so the pending visit of the Bike Fairy is not yet urgent.
