Bike dreaming

I’m still dreaming of a new mountain-bike, and have been dragging the Moosling through all the local bike stores to look at the 2011 bikes that are arriving. The Giant Anthem W? The Giant Anthem 29er? A Santa Cruz Juliana?

With all the snow and cold weather recently, the trails are still thoroughly covered though, so the pending visit of the Bike Fairy is not yet urgent.

I was thinking of doing an alternate version – maybe I need to provide a copy with blank thought bubbles for everyone to compose as they wish.

I’m tempted to go 29er, as they sound fun (most people who are anti-29er seem to be all “But the Mathematics of it! It’s simply not logical! Now imagine if you will, a bike with 40″ wheels…” – the problem is that I’ll want to buy something before all the snow has all melted and everything is totally dry. Because that won’t be until about June probably. And I don’t think the bike shops are too keen on letting you take out nice clean bikes to test ride in mud and slush. So I might have to pick a bike based on hopping on it in the shop and imagining reeeeally hard.

It is quite frustrating not being able to test ride bikes properly. I rode my chosen one around the lanes for 15 minutes – not really comparable to singletrack.

But there are a few companies/distributers over her in Oz that allow better test rides: I was able to have a women’s Specialized for a weekend (to conclude it didn’t suit me) and I have heard that Trek get bikes into a shop in your size to trial properly. Dyon wants to try out the Paragon, he really liked that one.

So I would surprised if both those two didn’t do something similar in your neck of the woods. :)

Oh, but of course I do! Actually, maybe one of the other snow bikes that are out there these days. But now would be a terrible time to get one, all the snow is leaving – I’d have to go and find a beach to ride on :)
