Ground squirrels – they look as much like little meerkats as they do like tree squirrels, and spend most of the year lazing about underground. But for the few months of the year they are around, they sit on their hind legs a lot, squeak, dart into their burrows, and dart back out again to glare at you suspiciously. They’re all over the Sunshine Meadows (and further along the hike to Assiniboine Peak as well), as well as having burrows all over Canmore and Banff. And I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of watching them gambol around, chasing each other, and suspiciously glaring at me from their hind legs, their little paws hanging in the air.
