easter – the traditional time of the year for every climber in melbourne to descend upon mt. arapiles. except this year an awful lot of people seem to be going to moonarie… or somewhere that isn’t mt. arapiles. hopefully that translates to less than 1000 people at the campground, and maybe space to walk between the tents at the pines. hopefully, because i’ve actually been persuaded to join the pilgrimmage to arapiles at easter for the first time. well…. for a few days anyway, as i really want to get over to the grampians as well, and relish being an evil sport climber.

hoorah! it looks like we’re going to be hosting the australian uni rockclimbing championships down here in melbourne. now we just have to arrange a budget… and organise everything… and get sponsors… and blah, lots of work to do. but yay.
looking back at photos of ton sai beach from just 2 years ago, it’s alarming how much it’s been developed, and how much busier it is now. five years ago, there was only one set of bungalows there; a lot of people stayed over at railay beach. and now the entire beachfront has been developed – there are bars, and a travel centre, massage places, a sports bar with muay thai (thai boxing) …. and then there are more and more bungalows being built further and further back into the jungle. it seems like there’s construction madness everywhere throughout thailand – well, everywhere i went in the south anyway, everywhere there were areas of jungle being hacked down so more buildings could be built. you can’t really blame people though, when there’s so much money to be made from tourists.
this is a picture of the shiny thing which i got from everyone from my birthday. yes it is exciting. no you can’t touch it.
