recommendations #34: hit and run

I recommend not colliding with cars. I was riding in a bike lane the other afternoon, heading straight. Then suddenly there was a car in front of me – he had been coming from the opposite direction, and was turning in front of me to go into a side street on my side of the road.

He saw me when he was already at the bike lane, and accelerated to try and make it through in front of me. He almost made it, but even with my braking, I still ran into the side of him, towards the back of the car. I ended up in a heap in the bike lane. He stopped for a moment, then decided to drive away. Fortunately a couple of nice men stopped and checked that I was ok, and volunteered to be witnesses, and urged me to report the incident to the police (which I’ve done). Hopefully I at least dented the side of his car.

Meanwhile, I escaped with no injuries, other than feeling a bit sore for a couple of days.

I hear the chances are pretty much zero of any punishment delivered to this knob-end. I’d like to think of it as assault with a deadly weapon, myself. Let us know how it goes.

On the other hand, if I was in his position – I’d be very tempted to drive off at speed. I wouldn’t like to face the wrath of bike rider: add anger at being run into, to adrenalin from accident, plus adrenalin from fanging around the suburbs using your own muscle power .. and a large D-lock within arms reach!

I didn’t think I looked particularly big and scary, but maybe he (I’m pretty sure I saw a guy in the car as it zoomed in front of me, I’m not just being sexist) is easily alarmed. At least we’re not puffer fish I suppose. That could be pretty amusing.

if we were puffer fish then we would all have built in air bags…however could be a problem if the easter bunny gets the jump on you with that knife
