graupel – Heavily rimed snow particles, often called snow pellets; often indistinguishable from very small soft hail.
Came across this word while doing work (yes, work) last night. I like it.

is that the same as, or what sleet is?
ahh, graupel. What I like to classify as, ‘well at least it’s not rain!’
apparently it’s this sorta stuff: http://www.uoregon.edu/~opp/snow/avalanche/crystal%20pics/graupel.jpg
although i’ve heard a whole number of definitions, so i think people just like the word and use it to describe any sort of precipitation that’s somewhere inbetween rain, hail and snow.
