The Festival of Eagles

Every October there’s a Festival of Eagles in Canmore to celebrate the migration of the Golden Eagle through the valley. So yesterday there were hoards of people standing around with binoculars in the middle of town, apparently spotting eagles soaring by (I saw a paraglider and an aeroplane).

Easier to spot were the birds in the Birds of Prey Exhibit, courtesy of the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation.

The Golden Eagle looked as if it was about to snap and kill someone

Great Horned Owl – was merely unimpressed

Burrowing Owl – would probably crawl up your trousers and devour your leg

My desires to go to Hogwarts have been re-awakened.

Preparing for Winter

Living in a valley has its perks – there are mountains everywhere for one. Unfortunately the mountains can block the sun pretty effectively though.

We’ve moved from living in a half-hour-of-direct-sunlight-per-day zone (where we were in a basement apartment to boot), to somewhere that won’t drop to less than four hours of direct sunlight, even in the dark depths of Winter. This should be an improvement.

Man Moose sighting

Another drive out in K-Country, and a quick look in at the swampy land near Engadine Lodge (it’s moose country). And what do you know, there was a boy moose there! With antlers and everything.
