A lake full of Helens

Maybe one day I’ll be up to date again, but in the meantime, here is another post finally coming about a month after the actual action.

This day was gloriously warm, and felt more like summer than post-leaf autumn.

With a visiting grandparent, we decided to get out hiking somewhere different. And for some reason, we’d never hiked up to Helen Lake. It lies just by Dolomite Peak up on Hwy 93 – an area we’d ski toured, but not visited in summer. Which is crazy, because it’s amazing.

Up near the treeline, views were gorgeous.

The lakes had started to freeze, which just meant there were lots of ice chunks around to throw into them.

We spent some time up there disturbing the peace as the boy gleefully threw ice into lakes.

On the final alpine stretch of trail to the lake there is quite a lot of trail braiding – it’s hard to pick the right trail to walk in.

There was a certain amount of bribery going on as we hiked. We haven’t been doing enough family hikes this summer, which of course we only realised now that summer is over. The boy did pretty well though for a 12km hike with around 420m of elevation gain – but occasional distribution of m&ms and raspberry jubes helped matters.

Dolomite Peak lurks dramatically trailside for most of the hike – looking even better for a sprinkling of snow on top.

My cunning plan after the hike was to ride back to Canmore. It was a great plan, but not as well thought out as I’d imagined. By the time we finished hiking, there was not an awful amount of daylight left.

They ended up dropping me off at Castle Junction, and I rode the 50km or so home. Which didn’t hurt my knee too much!

But the Helen Lake hike is highly recommended, and we’re already working on our hiking to do list for next year.

So this is hiking

Given that it was fairly sunny and warm in Canmore, we decided to drive to Sunshine where it was cold and snowing.

There we hiked uphill, where it was exposed, and so colder and windier.

Hurrah! We eventually reached a pass where it was really cold, and decided to go back to the car again, because brr. It’s that time of year where it’s easy to forget that the weather is actually cold now, and underestimate necessary layers.

And so after hiking back to the car, we went and had warm drinks and treats at Wildflour Bakery in Banff, which is always delicious.

And so shoulder season begins!

West Wind Pass

Hiking adventure!

West Wind Pass is just 5km return, but a nice taste of Kananaskis hiking. You get some of the views, and none of the scree. Perfect for flat-landers who still don’t have the hang of hikes with huge elevation gain, and perfect for boys who are declaring loudly to all and sundry that they don’t want to go up a mountain, and they just want to play minecraft/lego.

We had a short picnic session at the pass, re-enacted the scene from the Lion King (I’m very tempted to borrow another baby and come up and try this another time, when the light is a bit more suitable).

Back down above Spray Lakes…

Before heading home we made a quick diversion to this lovely mossy patch, which is a few hundred metres from the road on a nearby trail. It’s one of my favourite close-to-the-road spots in Kananaskis.

Sunshine Meadows

Sunshine Meadows is miraculously free of bugs right now. Rumour has it that they’re all over in British Columbia somewhere, planning the next phase of their campaign.

Having friends visiting is a pretty good excuse for our annual visit to the meadows though. The wildflowers are out, and there are piles of coins to be found on the ski runs. I mean, there are cute ground squirrels on the ski runs.

I first met Ben and Rosalba when we were at the University Games climbing in Sydney, back in 2003. This doesn’t make me feel old until I consider that it was over 12 years ago.

I was competing on a climb right next to Ben, but was allowed to re-start it because he had the footwork of an over-excited golden retriever.

Then we all climbed at Nowra, and did the 10 hour drive back to Melbourne together. Fun times. It’s good to catch up with old friends.

More mountain days

Scrambling up the Rimwall on my own – it’s mostly a hike, although with a couple of exciting moments thrown in.

Hiking doesn’t seem to be bothering my knee too much, as long as I take it easy on the descents.

I’d never been up the Rimwall before, so it was good to cover some new terrain. The view back down to Spray Lakes is old and familiar, but at a marginally different angle to previous hikes.

The Sunday Rimwall hike was followed up with another wander up the East End of Rundle on Monday. There the rapture came and took away my hiking companion. It was a lonely hike down.

One day my knee will work again.
