the junkyards

One of the handy things about Canmore – if you want to go on a quick ice climb, but still get other things done that day – the Junkyards. A little ice climbing location just on the edge of town, with one huge sheet of ice and a few more sections of ice further up the hill from that. Just a 5 minute drive and a 5 minute walk, and you’re climbing.

Just one of the things I’ve been distracted with recently instead of writing new posts.

Hi!
I heard that there was a spot in Grassi Lake where beginners ice climbers can go (and top rope). Can you top rope in the frozen Junkyard? And if so, do you know where you hang your rope – the way up?

Thanks!
Mireille

Hi Mireille,
Yes you can definitely top rope in the Junkyards. It’s easy to find your way to the top of the climbs, you can just walk around from the bottom, after you’ve walked up from the hydro plant at the base (you park at the Grassi Lakes trailhead, but walk out through all the hydro plant houses, and then up).
