To Moraine Lake with Chariot

In Winter the road to Moraine Lake is closed and becomes a ski trail. It’s 9km to the Moraine Lake viewpoint, mostly uphill (in a rolling sort of way, the first 4km has a lot more steep sections than the last 5km). Very do-able towing a Chariot, although we were hoping for better views. Also you’re in the shade for good chunks of the way if you ski it in the afternoon.

Clear roads as we drive out

Skiing up the closed road – the ski trail to Moraine Lake

Everyone else had either turned off or turned back by the 4km mark, so we started trail breaking.

Finally at the Moraine Lake viewpoint (this is where the groomed trail ends – which was irrelevant in our case, as the groomers had been trapped in Field by avalanche closures – but after this point the road to the lake also crosses a few avalanche paths, so it was our stopping point)

The view down to Moraine Lake. Less exciting when covered with snow.

Heading down again – well, it was supposed to be down, really it was just lots of slogging still. After 3km I gave in and let Alex tow again. Not long afterwards there were actually a couple of reasonable downhill sections. Bah.

Getting a bit cooler as the day wears on, hair frosting up

Sun setting, we got back to the car about 15 minutes after this

Finn’s favourite things #1: The Thermometer

When you’re walking around with him all cranky, the thermometer is one of the things that will distract him. Then he sits there and stares at it in fascination. And if you let him he’ll lick the window. (And yes, it’s currently reading about -20oC)

Bunnykins!

Ah, those well known bunnies running around the rim. Even Alex (who infamously has almost no childhood memories) recognised them. One of the gifts the Moosling got on his visit to Australia was his very own Bunnykins bowl. These days they seem to be made out of melamine instead of stoneware, but they’re still great (and oh so familiar).

Like Mama or like Papa?

The Evidence

Papa, a few months old

Mama at 4.5 months

Moosling at around 4 months

The Conclusion

Mama was an enormous Buddha baby. And the Moosling is definitely taking after his Papa as a baby (although the eyes and lack of hair appear to be thanks to Mama).

Additional Evidence

Mama at 7 months – suggesting that the Moosling might actually start growing hair eventually
